Ice hockey is not the first sport that springs to mind when you think of Australia’s sporting culture, but a game built for speed, strength and control, and played all over the world in the coldest conditions makes for an exciting watch regardless of whether you’re a veteran or first time hockey supporter.
On the 19th and 20th of October, your Melbourne Chargers will take on WA, NSW, ACT, and SA in the final clash of the National Tier 2 Women’s Ice Hockey season, with finals on the Sunday. The Chargers are coming off two very successful tournaments in Canberra and Adelaide this year, unbeaten in the first and one loss in the second, so they’re leading the charge with the final round being hosted at home in Dockland’s O’Brien Icehouse. They’re the team to beat so every game is going to be fast and intense, but the Chargers aren’t giving up their gold without a fight.
Winning gold last season wasn’t enough for this team. They’ve been training on and off ice all season in preparation for the biggest games of the year. So, come along and show your support in purple, enjoy a fun day out with the family and friends, and don’t forget to redeem your free hot beverage. The Bar and Café will be open for any food and drinks you’ll need during the games, and public skating is discounted to $10 per day with your AWT2 ticket.
Dr Bridie O'Donnell, Director Office for Women in Sport and Recreation will be officially opening the tournament by 'dropping the puck'.
Opening Ceremony starts at 1:15pm on Saturday 19th, with 4 games following at 1:30pm, 4:00pm, 6:30pm, and 9:00pm. Then Semi-Finals at 12:15pm and 1:30pm on Sunday 20th, followed by Bronze medal and Grand Final games at 4:00pm and 5:15pm respectively.
Tickets are $10 per day, and any other information can be found on the Melbourne Chargers Ice Hockey Facebook page: facebook.com/MelbourneChargersIceHockey
