The South West Women in Sport Leadership program will provide leadership training to 25 women who are currently involved in sporting clubs, local government or the broader sport sector.
Mel Jones is a former Australian cricketer, and since retiring from cricket, has been a commentator for international and domestic cricket matches.
In 2017, Mel was inducted to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.
Throughout her career, Mel challenged stereotypes experienced by many women in a male dominated sport, scoring a century on Test debut and leaving an indelible mark in the cricket commentary box. Breaking down barriers becoming the first female lead commentator in the men’s Big Bash and Indian Premier League.
Outside of cricket, Mel is a passionate mentor for aspiring female athletes. Her passion for providing women with the opportunity and encouragement to achieve their sporting goals has resulted in Mel working with some of Australia’s most elite athletes. Mel has also worked as an Ambassador with Australian charity, Red Dust, which promotes health initiatives in remote Aboriginal communities.
Currently, Mel is a sports commentator and passionate club sport advocate.
Mel Jones was a member of the 2015 Inquiry into Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation. She was also the original Change Our Game ambassador and ‘take action hero’.
