Change our Game Ambassador: Emma Carney

Emma Carney is a Sport Australia Hall of Fame, World Triathlon Hall of Fame and Triathlon Australia Hall of Fame inductee. Emma is one of the few athletes to represent Australia in two sports at world championship level, being athletics and triathlon. In triathlon, Emma is a multiple World Champion, three times world number one, nine times Australia Triathlon Champion and the most dominant triathlete in international triathlon history.

Prior to taking up triathlon Emma was a promising middle distance runner, winning two National Junior titles on the track. As a senior athlete, Emma represented Australia at two World Cross Country Championships.

Emma was forced to retire in 2004 when she suffered a cardiac arrest. She now has a defibrillator implant and manages her condition closely with her Cardiologist.

Emma is most comfortable while involved in sport and spends her time now coaching. Emma has a position at her former school Wesley College, developing physical literacy as her focus for student lifelong involvement in sport.

At a high-performance level, Emma found herself frustrated with Triathlon Australia’s focus on male high performance coach development, along with a decline in international triathlon performances in Australia. In response to this, Emma is setting up her own program in Melbourne with an aim to develop world class triathletes for Australia.

Emma is also a mum to Jack – her greatest achievement to date.
