Navigating Fair Access: Sport Sector Forums

The Fair Access Policy Roadmap aims to develop a statewide foundation to improve access to, and use of, community sports facilities for women and girls.

From July 2024, as part of the Roadmap, all Victorian councils will be required to have adopted a gender equitable access and use policy (or equivalent) to be considered eligible for community sports infrastructure funding from the State Government.

Since the Roadmap’s launch in August 2022, more than 1,000 people have participated in information and training sessions as part of the Education Phase of the three-phase Roadmap. The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation (OWSR) recently completed the Fair Access Roadshow, meeting with with councils around Victoria to support those organisations understand the obligations of the Gender Equality Act 2020 and how that connects to the Roadmap, and to provide support, guidance and connections with counterparts at other councils for the journey ahead.

But as the Roadmap makes clear, councils are only one piece of this change to level the playing field for women and girls.

To support the Victorian sport and recreation sector on its Fair Access journey, the OWSR and Vicsport are partnering to provide three Navigating Fair Access online forums, which will also form the conclusion of the Education Phase of the Roadmap.

These forums will aim to support greater understanding of the implementation of the Roadmap throughout Victoria, and highlight the important role that the sport sector has in progressing Fair Access alongside local government, and community sport:

- An opportunity to refresh your understanding of the Fair Access Policy Roadmap and the sports sector’s role in Fair Access

- Gain an understanding of strategic and operational actions that your sport can take a proactive approach to the Roadmap and to making your sport fairer and more inclusive for women and girls

- Case studies of Fair Access in action in the sports sector,  and an update on the activity planned in local government in the Readiness Phase

- The opportunity to share ideas and questions about your approach to Fair Access with other sports and the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation

The sessions are aimed at all relevant and interested sector staff, including:

- Leadership teams

- Government relations staff

- Participation & development staff

- Club and league liaison staff

- Staff with a focus or interest in diversity and inclusion
