Women in Sports Media Program participants announced

Friday, 04 October 2024

We’re excited to announce the 2024/25 Change Our Game Women in Sports Media Program participants, including some notable athletes set to dive into the sports media industry.

The program provides participants with an opportunity to learn from industry experts and strengthen their knowledge and skills to help advance their media career.

Former Matilda’s goalkeeper Lydia Williams is one of 17 participants named to take part in the Women in Sports Media Program, working to address the underrepresentation within the sports media industry.

As someone who's been fortunate to represent Australia and the Matildas for nearly 20 years, I want to give back to the industry that has given me so much by creating more visibility. There are not enough women in sports media, particularly indigenous women. We need to bridge the gap, foster inclusivity, and ensure the next generation feels empowered to pursue their passions with confidence.

Women remain under-represented in sports media in Victoria, with only 27% of sports news bylines found to be contributed by women journalists in 2023-24.

Director of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, Sarah Styles echoed Williams’ sentiment about providing women with more opportunities to be part of the conversation.

‘Sport is covered in our media more than any other topic. This program is ensuring more women are shaping that conversation and building their careers across the full spectrum of sports media.’

Southside Flyers captain and Australian Opal, Rebecca Cole, has also been selected for the program, building on her experience as an expert commentator, host and co-producer of a YouTube and podcast series.

The program will be facilitated by Emma Race and Lucy Race from Making the Call, 2 very well-respected professionals within the sports media field who share their network and experience to assist participants with making meaningful industry connections and to refine their skillsets.

More women in media will help tackle the skew in coverage and shift the narrative around who we celebrate as heroes, leaders and experts.
