New research on participation pathways for women coaches in community sport

Thursday, 08 February 2024

The experiences of women coaches in community sport are diverse and influenced by a range of factors. This can include governance, culture, policies, and sport coaching pathways.

New research has examined the current environment for women coaching in community sports. The study looked at 3 major sports, all with a majority of men in coaching roles: football (soccer), basketball, and Australian rules football.

It explored the key barriers experienced by women coaches. A set of recommendations outline how sports governing bodies and community clubs can further support women coaches at a community sports level.

The study was undertaken by La Trobe University, in partnership with Northern Football Netball League, Basketball Victoria and Football Victoria, and funded through the Change Our Game Research Grants Program.
