Play Big: new women-led sports show

Thursday, 06 March 2025

To mark International Women’s Day 2025, Broad Radio, in collaboration with the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, is launching Play Big, a ground-breaking four-part sports series airing live from Saturday 15 March.

Play Big a radio segment on Broad Radio led by women about sport

Featuring an ensemble of outstanding established and emerging sports commentators, and co-hosted by Emma Race (The Outer Sanctum, Making the Call) and Rana Hussain (Broad Radio), Play Big is a new live sports radio show led by women, for everyone, about the sports we love.

Broad Radio Founder and CEO Jo Stanley said for too long, women’s voices in sports broadcasting have struggled to be heard. Despite the explosive growth of women’s sport, the radio airwaves have remained dominated by men – until now.

"We’ve seen recently a clear demand from audiences for respectful and celebratory discussion about women’s sport. Well, Play Big is it,” Jo said.

“Women’s sport is thriving, stadiums are full, and the appetite for intelligent, passionate and insightful commentary has never been stronger. It’s time for a new era where women don’t just play sport – they lead it, call it, analyse it and celebrate it.”

The show will air live every Saturday from 9am - 11am on Broad Radio, with episodes repurposed into podcasts and featured on Broad Radio’s platforms and the Change Our Game website.

It comes after recently released research showed that in Victoria, women hold just 23% of radio news bylines in sport. Learn more at our Conversation of Sport 2023-24 insights page.

Experts include alumni from the Change Our Game Women in Sports Media Program, providing direct opportunities for women to progress in sports media. Visit our program page to learn more about the program.
