The week that was

Tuesday, 26 November 2024

There has been no shortage of women's sport with the WBBL and AFLW heading into finals and awards season in  full swing.

Three Melbourne Renegades stepping out onto the MCG

It was a blockbuster week in the world of women’s sport with the ParaMatildas claiming victory after a come-from-behind win in the IFCPF Women's World Cup, while the stage is set for the AFLW Grand Final. The WNBL celebrated Indigenous Round while the A League Women had Unite Round.

ParaMatildas

The ParaMatildas notched up a clean sweep at the IFCPF Women's World Cup, not dropping a match throughout their entire tournament to eventually reign champions. Spearheaded by captain and goalkeeper Katelyn Smith, the ParaMatildas not only hold a nice shiny gold medal but so too a history making win, as the only Australian football team to win a World Cup title.

Down by 2 goals in the first 6 minutes of the match, the ParaMatildas rallied, running rampant against the US to claim a scintillating 6-2 win.

AFLW

Ebony Marinoff has been crowned the 2024 AFLW Best and Fairest with the Adelaide Crows midfielder sneaking home in a tight race. The midfielder was also honoured with her seventh All Australian blazer.

The focus switches to the grand final, with powerhouse clubs North Melbourne and Brisbane Lions set to face off. North Melbourne put on a convincing show, defeating Port Adelaide by 57 points to book their spot in the grand final.  Meanwhile, it’s familiar territory for the Brisbane Lions who are into their third straight AFLW Grand Final. The Lions got the job done by 18 points in the preliminary final against Adelaide Crows, thanks to a blockbuster four-goal third term.

In a historic move, it will be a night match for the first time, starting at 7.45pm AEDT on Saturday 30 November at Ikon Park. Watch on the Seven Network, 7Plus app, Fox Footy and Kayo and Binge.

Rugby union

Maddison Levi has taken out the Women’s Sevens Player of the Year at the World Rugby Awards. She is only the third Australian to receive the prestigious award.

The 22-year-old had a record-breaking season scoring an impressive 69 trues in the 2023-34 SVNS world series, to help Australia secure the silverware, while her star-studded performance at the Olympics saw her register 14 ties – the most by an individual at the Olympics.

WBBL

It’s finals time in the WBBL with the Melbourne Renegades hosting their first-ever final at the MCG. The finals system looks a bit different this year with the series broken down into three levels.

The Knockout: This match will see Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes go head to head at Drummoyne Oval with the winner then advancing to the next stage.

Hockey One

Finals season is also underway in the Hockey One with Perth Thundersticks and the Tassie Tigers going head-to-head in their semi-final on Saturday, 30 November before Brisbane Blaze and NSW Pride battle it out for a spot in the Grand Final.

NSW's Abby Wilson will be hoping to replicate her magic in this final, coming off a hattrick in her last performance, while Brisbane will be looking to defend their title. Tassie will be eager to utilise their home crowd advantage to knock off Perth.
