Together we’re unstoppable - This Girl Can

Monday, 11 November 2024

VicHealth's 'This Girl Can' week is underway, helping encourage women and girls to get active.

VicHealth’s ‘This Girl Can Week’ is in full swing with a range of events happening across the state to help encourage women and girls to get active from Monday 11 – Sunday 17 November.

The campaign focuses on women moving their bodies in a way that suits them. It’s all about creating safe and welcoming spaces for women of all backgrounds, ages and abilities.

To coincide with This Girl Can Week 2024, VicHealth has released research showing the challenges that women from multicultural communities face when it comes to getting active.

The survey of almost 1,000 women across the state found that like many Victorian women, almost 1 in 2 women from multicultural communities feel worried about showing their body while exercising and nearly a third fear judgement while exercising, with these trends spiking among women with children.

This week, councils across the state are hosting free or low-cost activities to cater to all levels of activity and experience. Throughout the week Maribyrnong City Council are hosting walking football, KangaMix and women’s swimming while Manningham City Council have you covered if indoor soccer for mums, mountain biking or silent disco is more your style.

The City of Casey have Zumba, cricket, soccer and yoga sessions available for those who are eager to try their hand at something new.

Gippsland is also offering a range of activities such as bowling with babies aimed at encouraging mums with bubs to find their way back to exercise that suits them, while the new sensation of pickleball will also be on offer.

There are also several safe and inclusive events happening throughout the week welcoming spaces. The activities include Community Paddleboarding run by Indigenous Surfing Victoria or Yirol women’s dance clubs for South Sudanese women.

There is no shortage of options to choose from and if you’re interested in getting involved head to your local council’s website to see what’s on.
