Gender Equality in Community Sport

DR TUBA BOZ
Research Fellow, School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, RMIT University

Dr Tuba Boz is a Research Fellow at the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies and coordinates the Migration, Mobility and Security Research Network (MM&S RN) at RMIT University. She has worked on international projects for academic institutions, government and non-government organisations related to anthropological and sociological issues focusing on social cohesion, migration and intercultural interaction.

Dr Boz was Vice-Chair of the European Muslim Initiative of Social Cohesion (EMSICO) from 2010-2014.

Her recent projects include ‘Youth multiculturalism from below: Learning, sharing and living sports and arts on the fringes of Melbourne’ funded by Gandel Philanthropy. She is currently working on a project with Prof Hariz Halilovich focusing on ‘Overcoming barriers and parental attitudes towards physical activity outcomes of Muslim girls on the fringes of Melbourne’ funded by the Victorian government’s Change Our Game Research Grants Program.

SARAH LOH
Executive Manager- Future Healthy Group at VicHealth

Sarah Loh has recently commenced in her new role as the Executive Manager – Future Healthy Group for VicHealth since January 2022.

Prior to VicHealth, Sarah was the Chief Executive Officer of the South Metro Junior Football League where she was the first female CEO in AFL in 2016. During her time, Sarah was instrumental in increasing female and multicultural participation. She was also a champion against harmful industries and introduced a raft of initiatives including no junk food in sport sponsorship, introduction of the community fund to remove costs associated with participation and championing mental health during Covid.

Sarah holds a Masters in Sport Business and has over three decades of Sports Management within the private sector, Local Government, State Sporting Organisations and the Recreation sector.

ANDREW SKILLERN
Chief Executive Officer, Hockey Victoria

Andrew has been the CEO of Hockey Victoria for close to eight years.  Over this time participation in women’s and girls’ hockey has increased as has the representation of women on HV’s Board, Sub Committees and President roles across the Victorian hockey community. This growth has come through strategic competition and policy reform with clubs. Furthermore, Andrew was instrumental in establishing the world class facilities for elite female hockey players at Melbourne Sports Centres (MSC) in close partnership with colleague Rosie King (Netball Victoria).

Andrew’s progressive and innovative approach to business has resulted in significant change in the approach taken at State and National level across a variety of areas of hockey’s national operations. Andrew led the development and implementation of Hockey One, Australia’s elite Women’s and Men’s Competition which launched in 2019 and the establishment of HC Melbourne, Victoria’s marquee Hockey Team. Andrew has also led the establishment of aligned programming across Game Development, Competition Management and Commercial Operations in South Australia after working as the CEO of South Australian hockey in 2020 & 2021.  A role he undertook part time and remotely while maintaining his role as CEO of Hockey Victoria.

As an inaugural Change of Game Champion Andrew saw it his responsibility to lead the development and launch of a Gender Equity and Diversity Plan in May 2019 and furthermore the monthly reporting against the aspirational targets set out in the plan.

Andrew’s passion and energy for sport and its impact in society is infectious.  He develops good people, strong results and collegiate approach to sport.
