What is the Fair Access Policy Roadmap?
The Fair Access Policy Roadmap is a policy framework created by the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, in partnership with VicHealth and Sport and Recreation Victoria. It is the first of its kind in Australia.
Its goal is to make sure women and girls across the state have equal access to community sports facilities.
Under the Roadmap, all local councils in Victoria and Alpine Resorts Victoria have adopted a policy that supports equal access to sports facilities for everyone. Each community has its own needs, so each council has its own policy that is locally relevant and responsive to their needs.
Councils must show progress against these policies over time if they wish to remain eligible for Victorian Government funding for community sport infrastructure. It also aligns with councils’ existing obligations as Defined Entities under the Gender Equality Act 2020.
The journey to Fair Access isn’t a single event, instead it is a continuous process of setting actions and targets, delivery, reporting, evaluation and improvement. This is why the Roadmap doesn’t have an end date, because the focus on progress doesn’t end.
Why Fair Access?
We all want community sport and recreation to have safe and welcoming environments.
But research shows that men and boys still are often given the best courts, training grounds, and practice times.
This can make it harder for women and girls to get involved and reach their full potential.
Fair Access will ensure that everyone has the chance to get involved, be encouraged, have equal opportunities, access support, and be rewarded.
