International Day of the Girl 2022

In 2012, the United Nations declared October 11 as International Day of the Girl, a global day of recognition to celebrate the achievements and potential of girls.

Today, on the 10-year anniversary of the celebration, the purpose remains the same - to create awareness of the basic needs and challenges girls face, whilst promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

To celebrate International Day of the Girl, the Director of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, Sarah Styles, and 10-year-old women’s sport advocate Olivia from @SportyGirlStories (check out her Instagram!) caught up to talk about International Day of the Girl in the context of sport - their hopes for the future of sport, and the challenges girls might experience in this space.

Styles said “If I could change one thing in the sporting world on International Day of the Girl, I would love to take any doubt that girls might feel about sport away. Today’s a chance to highlight where there are opportunities for us to all do things better.”

You can watch the interview here.

Let’s celebrate the wonderful role girls play in our families, schools, communities and sporting clubs, and let’s make sure we continue to create opportunities for girls to be able to fulfil their dreams.
