The Women in Sport Media program provided participants with a unique chance to gain insight from industry experts.

Women in Sport Media participants and industry experts

Empowered. Energised. Inspired.

Those were some of the common words participants in our 2024 Change Our Game, Women in Sport Media program shared after a day of networking and learning.

Our Women in Sport Media program continues to address the gender gap in sports media. Released in February 2024, The Conversation of Sport: Representation of Women in Sports News Coverage showed 73% of bylines on sport stories originated from men in comparison to 27% from women.

Since the program’s inception in 2020, we have supported more than 100 women to advance their careers. Participants in this latest group took part in bespoke workshops and connected with industry experts to help hone their crafts and gain further clarity on what their future could look like.

The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation’s Head of Program Strategy and Research, Rayoni Nelson emphasised the importance of programs such as Women in Sport Media in providing an avenue for women to collaborate and connect with peers while also gaining invaluable insights.

Having access to industry leaders such as Nat Edwards and Sam Lewis is an incredible opportunity for program participants to learn from those with experience, to hone key skills and deepen their understanding of how the sports media industry works. The program also creates a sense of community with other participants building their experience and creating a career within the sports media industry, as a key network in supporting each other.

The day featured invaluable insights from industry gurus including Head of Channel 7 Sport, Chris Jones, commentator and MC, Nat Edwards, ABC producer, Tess Armstrong, former Change Our Game ambassador and diversity and inclusion advocate Rana Hussain, journalist Sam Lewis and many more.
